SAN MATEO, FL -- For two months, the people living in San Mateo have been fighting a new water fee. But after much discussion, the County Commission has decided to kill the 'Ready to Serve' fee in Phase one.
"We're very happy. You know, there are a lot of happy people here," says Glenda Wells.
Wells and her neighbors opposed the fee. On Your Side's Ken Amaro took their concerns to one of the county commissioners who said he will review their concerns.
At the Putnam County July meeting, the issue was discussed and the 'Ready to Serve' fee for East Palatka residents was canceled.
"It is a dead issue in phase one," says County Commissioner Kenny Eubanks. He says it was not fair to the residents.
"I felt like at this point in time. the 'Ready to Serve' fee, because of the way it was presented, we need to back up, regroup and do away with it," says Eubanks.
Wells says she's glad with the outcome and will keep an eye on any future fees that may impact her community.
The county recently installed water lines in her community. Residents are being given the choice of subscribing or not subscribing to the service. Those who sign up before August 15, will have connection fees waived.
The 'Ready to Serve' fee was for those who elected to opt out.
