PALATKA, FL -- An appetite for drugs led to the capture of two inmates who broke out of the Putnam County Jail earlier this month
The Sheriff's Office says Doni Brown and Timothy Fletcher, after fleeing the state, returned to Florida to buy drugs from a dealer in the town of Putnam Hall.
The dealer, who happened to be an informant for the Sheriff's Office, told investigators the two fugitives said they didn't have any money but vowed to return with cash.
The informant then alerted investigators, who brought in state and federal help to look for the two men who had left a trail of murder and stolen cars in their five-day run from the law.
Investigators scoured the Lake Como area. Authorities learned Brown and Fletcher tried to escape in a jeep but crashed.
Later, calls from homeowners in the Pomona Park area about two men acting suspicious drew investigators in that direction and, ultimately, to the capture of the two men.
Fletcher and Brown face a handful of charges, including murder for the death of 66-year-old Helen Googe, Fletcher's step-grandmother.
Deputies found her dead inside her home in Bardin hours after Fletcher and Brown escaped.
The two men escaped with the help of a bottle-jack that had been ripped out of a prison van and smuggled into jail by Fletcher.
The contraband made it past security because Fletcher hid it in a cast on his leg.
The internal investigation into policies and procedures at the jail is expected to wrap up sometime next week.
