ST. JOHNS COUNTY, FL -- Three St. Johns County deputies shot and killed a man early Saturday morning at a truck stop near County Road 206 after he pulled out a gun.
The identity of the shooting victim has not been released. According to the sheriff's office, a deputy was patrolling the Flying J Truck stop off Interstate 95 and County Road 206, when he noticed a suspicious car. He ran the license plate and the car came back registered to 52-year-old Rodney Joseph Lasseigne, a fugitive featured on America's Most Wanted last week in the killing of his 68-year-old mother, Juanita Gibson, in 2008. READ: AMW PROFILE OF RODNEY LASSEIGNE When deputies surrounded the car, they saw a man who appeared to be sleeping under a pile of blankets. After knocking on the car's window, the man inside pulled out a shotgun. Investigators say he pointed the weapon at deputies. They opened fire, fatally wounding him. Deputies have not said whether the shooting victim is both the America's Most Wanted fugitive and the registered owner of the vehicle. No deputies were injured, and it's unclear if the man ever fired his weapon. A few months back, a deputy with the SJCSO spotted the same car and ran the license plate through a crime database but nothing suspicious appeared. A few days later the deputy received a call from the US Marshal's Office. Investigators had questions about the license plate. A glitch in the database apparently caused the deputy to view the wrong information. According to America's Most Wanted, Gibson lived with her son in a trailer park in Gautier, Mississippi. In July 2008, the two took a trip to bury Gibson's ex-husband and were not heard from. Several days later, concerned family members went to the trailer park where Gibson lived. That's when police found Gibson's body. Lasseigne was a suspect. Gibson's body was covered in blankets and surrounded by pillows in her mobile home. She apparently died of blunt force trauma to the head. Police believe he lived with the corpse of his mother for some time. Gautier police say Lasseigne took off in a silver 2008 Toyota Yaris with a handicapped license plate from Mississippi. It's the same make and model of car discovered outside the truck stop before this morning's fatal shooting.
