ST. AUGUSTINE, FL -- A 300-acre brush fire that displaced nearly 20 families is now more than 75% contained. St. Augustine Fire Department Spokesperson Jeremy Robshaw says the fire started off Cypress Road, near US 1 South and State Road 206 around 2 p.m. Sunday. Robshaw says 15 to 20 homes were evacuated as a precaution, but homeowners have been cleared to return home. He adds that those houses are not in the direct path of the fire. The Red Cross has opened a shelter for the displaced residents at Grace Pointe Church, on US 1 about half a mile south of S.R. 206. Most of the families have opted to stay with relatives. There have been no reports of injuries. Robshaw says no structures have been damaged. The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, St. Johns County firefighters, and the Division of Forestry helicopters are all out fighting the blaze. Robshaw says the fire is moving south. He adds there is a natural break in the fire, and officials hope that will help them gain control of it. A First Coast News crew is at the scene gathering more information.
