JACKSONVILLE, FL -- More than 200 students from across the First Coast who are part of the Take Stock In Children program gathered to celebrate their successes at a time when funding is under fire.
The non-profit organization sponsors a mentoring program and scholarships for students who commit to stay and school and see their mentor once a week.
"As staff we hope the funding continues," said Helen Quinn, a former student in the program who now works for Take Stock In Children.
"We need these programs to help these gets to get what they need to be," said Quinn.
On Friday, students toured the north campus of Florida Community College to see first hand the next step many of them will make.
Courtney Smith is a freshman who has her eyes on being a pharmacist. Smith credits the program for helping her focus on the future.
"They have mentors that help you and guide you with whatever your need," said Smith.
Take Stock In Children says its funding from the state was cut last year by 30%. The group doesn't know what it can expect this year as the state struggles with an economy, which could force even more cuts.
