JACKSONVILLE BEACH, FL -- Four Army chaplains were honored in a ceremony at the American Legion Post 129 Sunday.
The four chaplains, Lt. George L. Fox, Lt. Alexander D. Goode, Lt. John P. Washington and Lt. Clark V. Poling, were all on board the U.S.A.T. Dorchester on February 2, 1943. That day the ship was struck by a torpedo from a German submarine and sank in the Atlantic.
Witnesses say the four chaplains offered prayers during the chaos as the ship sank and even gave up their life jackets so others could survive.
672 people on board the ship died and 230 people survived.
The Dorchester was a luxury coastal liner that was turned into an Army transport ship for World War II.
