PUTNAM COUNTY, FL -- The man police say stole a truck and rammed a police car has died from his injuries.
The Putnam County Sheriff's Office says after a construction worker at US 17 and Yelvington Rd. in East Palakta saw his construction truck get stolen and called police all deputies were on the lookout.
Deputy Craig Walters saw the truck and pulled it over on State Road 207, right at the county line. As Walters was walking toward the truck, the suspect put the truck in reverse and rammed the police car twice, sending it across the road into a ditch.
The car also ran over Walters' foot while it was being rammed.
Walters then shot several times at the truck, unsure if he had hit the driver.
The suspect in the truck drove away, but only made it about 100 feet before he crashed into a power pole, splitting it and knocking the power lines down.
Either the shots or the crash critically injured the suspect, who was unable to get out of the truck.
Walters, a 2-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office, was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries; he's in good condition.
The suspect was taken to Shands Gainesville with life-threatening injuries. He died early Wednesday.
He has been identified as 31-year-old Raymond Bruce Witmer, Jr.
Joanne Nedelsky runs a roadside fruit stand at the county line right where the traffic stop happened. She watched the whole thing unfold from inside the business.
"I think that's what started me shaking so bad, to think those bullets could have gone another direction or ricocheted toward me, I was very scared, I was shaking," says Nedelsky.
