New indoor go kart facility quenches your need for speed

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A new destination for thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies is now open on the First Coast.

Autobahn Indoor Speedway held a grand opening ceremony Thursday morning at its location near John Turner Butler Boulevard and I-95.

"Our vision is to be a staple in Jacksonville and offer a different form of entertainment that is something fun to do without having to be out in the heat," said general manager Donald Wagner.

Wanger said the plan to build an indoor go kart facility in Jacksonville began roughly two years ago.

Currently, there is only one other location in the United States. Wagner said franchise owners were interested in expanding to the River City because of its existing go kart culture.

"If you want to do indoor carting, you have to drive down to Orlando. There's a lot of people in Jacksonville who make that trip. We capitalize on just everybody loving racing down here," he said.

The new facility is 80,000 sq. ft. and has two professionally designed tracks. It's located at 6601 Executive Park North.

Wager said, "Our two tracks are Grand Prix style tracks. They have hairpins. They're not just oval tracks or simple figure eight."

The go karts have the potential to go up to 50 miles per hour and are not your standard models.

"These are some of the best karts money can buy. Our investment is about $10,000 per kart," Wagner said.

Full-time staff members help guide patrons through a safety tutorial and helmet fitting before getting them settled in a go kart. Wager said the facility is designed for both novices and experts and makes safety the absolute top priority.

He said, "Safety is paramount. You can be eight or 80. As long as you can safely get into a car and you can drive, you can do it."

There are 56 total karts with 40 reserved for adults who are at least 13 years old and 56" tall. The rest are for kids who are at least 18 years old and 48" tall.

Autobahn Indoor Speedway will be open seven days a week and is available for parties or corporate functions.
