New $2.4M fire station opens in Bartram Park

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A brand new $2.4 million fire station is now open in Bartram Park. People who live in the area say the station and its services are much needed.

If an emergency happens, you want firefighters to come as quickly as they can and they always do.

But, before Thursday, the closest fire station to Bartram Park residents like Anuradha Jamwal was 10 miles away.

"It was a little scary because there's a train track on the way," Jamwal said. "So, sometimes it can be late when you need it."

Now, fire officials said area families can get help in just seconds.

"It's great feeling to know that when you need help," Jamwal explained. "It's right across and they can reach you really quick."

Thursday, the city of Jacksonville and the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department officially opened Station 62 at 14279 Bartram Park Boulevard.

JFRD Captain John Long said the area's population has exploded in the last decade.

"Realize 10 years ago, most of the buildings out here weren't here," Captain Long said. "It's been over those last 10 years that this area has really exploded."

Jacksonville's Mayor Alvin Brown said it will protect 27,000 people living in the area.

Brown also said the new fire station would save taxpayers, business and homeowners "a lot of money."

"Not only that, but their insurance rate would go down for homeowners and businesses," Brown said. "So, it's a very, very good investment the city has made for this fire station."

A fire official estimated that the new station could save homeowners up to $2,000 or possibly even more on homeowners insurance rates.

JFRD said professional firefighters, EMTs and paramedics will work three 24-hour shifts.

"We'll be doing some mutual aide agreements with St. Johns County and we'll be helping St. Johns County north, also," Captain Long said.

"This is really amazing, to have a fire station of our own," Jamwal said.
