Pilot identified in fatal plane crash at Camp Blanding

The pilot has been identified as Herman E. Steele from Tennessee.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office has identified the pilot who died in a small plane crash at Camp Blanding on Thursday.

Deputies identified the pilot as Herman E. Steele from Tennessee. The Federal Aviation Authority said the crash happened around 3:15 p.m. and it involved a small private aircrafted, a Mooney MO20. It said he was the only one on board of the plane.

Steele was planning to stop at Cecil Airport to visit family, but radioed the Jacksonville International Airport to report a problem, deputies said. JIA tried to radio him after, but he didn't respond.

The National Transportation Safety Board is now investigating the crash and will determine the cause of the crash.
