UNION COUNTY, N.C. -- A mother was hit and killed Thursday morning moments after watching her child get onto the school bus.
According to police, the child got onto the bus and was not seated. The bus driver released the bus' stop arm and prepared to pull back into traffic, but noticed the standing child.
During this moment, the Hanna (Glenda) Gosney was passing in front of the bus to cross the street. As she stepped out into the road she was hit and killed by a passing car.
Family members have told NBC Charlotte that Gosney loved her five children "more than anything."
According to school officials, there were 11 children on board the bus when Gosney was hit and killed.
The incident took place Thursday morning on State Line Road in Union County. Police were alerted around 6:45 a.m.
Union County Public School Superintendent Andrew G. Houlihan tweeted saying this was an, "awful tragedy this a.m." and sent his thoughts and prayers to those impacted. "Counselors and support will be at Union Elementary to provide assistance.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating.
