Missing child leads to lockdown, panic at Avenues Mall

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Stores at the Avenues Mall were on lock down for a brief time Friday afternoon due to a missing child.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office confirmed at 5:30 p.m. they were investigating an incident at the mall.

Some people on social media were saying that a shooter was inside the mall. JSO said there was never a shooting incident, but a misunderstanding.

A spokeswoman for the Avenues Mall told First Coast News that a small child was separated from his father and eventually found.

JSO said the confusion happened when the father yelled "I lost my son" and people interpreted as "I have a gun" and called police. JSO said that's why they responded with such a large presence of law enforcement.

The child was located hiding. All stores have been re-opened.
