Man gets 40 years in prison for armed robbery

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison. He was convicted of armed robbery in December 2013.

Dredrik Jhamar Simpson was also sentenced to five years for grand theft auto, 15 years for aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude an officer and five years for carrying a concealed firearm according to a release from the State Attorney's Office. He will serve all of these sentences concurrently.

Simpson approached the victim after parking her friend's vehicle in her apartment complex in February 2012. Simpson pointed a gun at the victim while he took her keys and purse.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spotted Simpson in the vehicle a few hours later. He crashed the vehicle after trying to drive away from officers.

Police caught Simpson shortly after he ran from the crash and found the victim's property in his pockets.

According to a State Attorney's press release DNA links Simpson to the gun and the victim's car.

Simpson also has six other armed robbery cases still pending.
