Man found dead inside Southside home after SWAT callout

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 51 -year-old Jacksonville man is dead following a standoff with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Residents in the Indian Springs neighborhood were evacuated from their homes for four hours

It all started at about 8:45 this morning at a doctor's office on Centurian Parkway. A man was distraught in the doctor's office. JSO said the man returned to his home on Aztec Drive West and barricaded himself inside.

After four hours of negotiations, JSO officers went inside the house and found the man dead inside.

"I'm just real sad to know that it ended in his death, " said neighbor Roz Rush. "He was a very nice man, as far as I know, he was a very good father, always saw him out. He was a great neighbor. He helped us in times of need.

JSO hasn't released the man's name but Rush opened up to First Coast News about him.

"He was a very nice and gentle man. And I just didn't know that he was going through any kind of struggle," said Rush.

She was one of several residents of Indian Springs who was evacuated from their homes. John Heislman was another.

"I was woken up about 10:15, 10:30ish with an officer knocking on my door. He basically just said the neighborhood was being evacuated, didn't really give much detail, except something about a neighbor having some sort of possible firearm and that the area was dangerous," said Heislman

The SWAT team was called to the scene and used several techniques to get the man out of the home. JSO Chief of Patrol East Michelle Cook says negotiators hadn't heard from the man and at about 1-30 they entered the home.

"SWAT Officers entered the house, and found the victim deceased from what appears to be a self inflicted gun shot wound. At this time, JSO Homicide is taking over the investigation," said Cook.

"This is not how we thought it would end. We hoped they would be able to get to him and get him the help that he needs. My prayers are with the family. And I hope they'll be able to get the assistance they need to make it though this situation," said Rush.

JSO hasn't released any information on why this whole thing started in the first place.
