Man, dog killed by train in crash off Edgewood Avenue

Several people died in different crashes this weekend.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man and his dog were struck and killed Sunday night by a train near Edgewood Avenue, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday in the 1100 block of Edgewood Avenue, where a man was seen by witnesses walking his dog.

As the train was coming toward the intersection from the south, the dog got “spooked” by the train and ran toward it, JSO PIO Christian Hancock said.

The man ran after his dog and both were struck by the train and died at the scene.

The Amtrak train is stalled at the scene of the crash currently, and the intersection of Plymouth and Roosevelt will be blocked off for several hours, Hancock said.

He said the crossing arms were down and the man was crossing as he should have.

The investigators may be gathering video footage from the train, if available.
