Kayaker rescued on St. Johns River

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A kayaker was rescued Tuesday afternoon after paddling against the tide for about four hours, according to a witness.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department confirmed they responded to the 3500 block of University Boulevard, near the area of the St. Johns River where the kayaker was located, and had a unit on scene.

Witness Gretchin Liese told First Coast News that the kayaker was picked up by rescue units shortly after she called First Coast News to report the kayaker in distress.

The kayaker's identity and condition are unknown at this time.
