JSO: 6-year-old boy killed in 'very horrific accident' outside Regency apartment complex

A 4-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle outside an apartment complex in Regency. He has suffered life-threatening injuries.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 6-year-old boy has died after being run over by a vehicle at an apartment complex in Regency Sunday, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

JSO responded at about 2 p.m. Sunday to the 300 block of Monument Road at the Bella Terraza Apartments, where they found the 6-year-old boy suffering from injuries caused by a car running him over, JSO spokesman Christian Hancock said. The boy later died from those injuries.

The driver of the vehicle drove onto the sidewalk where the child was and struck him. That driver is cooperating with police in the investigation. It is believed this was a "very horrific accident," Hancock said.

Neighbors at the scene said they believe the driver meant to go in reverse but pressed the accelerator instead.
