Jacksonville restaurant ready to reopen after shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla -- The Applebee's on Lane Avenue is ready to reopen, less than a month after a 42-year-old woman was shot and killed.

Police say Lisa Vaney died after her estranged husband, Sheridan Vaney, shot her five times. The shooting is thought to have happened after the two got into an argument.

Andrea Davis has worked at the restaurant for 4 years. She says reopening sends a strong message.

"Fresh new start, new beginning," she said.

When Applebee's reopens Friday, it will be re-done from top to bottom.

"It doesn't even look the same here, not that that's going to change what happened, but definitely a new start," Davis said.

Laura McCambridge is the Restaurant Manager. She says she wants her place to be a strong part of rebuilding a safer, more thriving community.

"It's changed the entire environment I think for the guests coming in and the employees here at well," she said.

The renovation was planned well before the shooting in late December. The Lane Ave. Applebee's is the first of almost 40 area restaurants that will get the upgrades.
