JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- We have an update to the story about a car dealership giving a $400 refund to customer, $85 of it in pennies.
Irena Mujakovic has received her refund, in dollar bills. Dealer Ed Di Miranda said he wanted to let sleeping dogs lie and went to the bank and converted the coins into dollars.
Di Miranda said the experience has been humbling and damaging to his year old car dealership.
"I am not a horrible person," he said.
The story went viral on social media and Di Miranda said it generated hundreds of prank calls and hate emails to the dealership.
"I have sold 200 cars without a peep," he said," and then this."
The dealerships Facebook page has also taken a toll.
The customer, Mujakovic, said she received the refund in $20s, $5s and $1s.
"I'm glad I didn't have to count all those pennies," she said.
She also is surprised by the impact of social media.
"I feel bad for him," she said," I really did not want this to go this far."
Di Miranda said now he has to recover from the negative backlash, he hopes it doesn't force him to close his dealership.
