President Obama declares State of Emergency for Florida

President Obama officially declared a State of Emergency in Florida on Thursday afternoon as the East Coast braces for Hurricane Matthew.

The president ordered federal aid to assist state, local, and tribal response efforts due to the emergency conditions that began on Oct. 3.

The emergency declaration authorizes the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to coordinate disaster relief efforts.

The move also authorizes FEMA to identify, mobile, and provide equipment and other resources to help assist during the response.

Florida's governor declared a State of Emergency on Tuesday for all of Florida's 67 counties.
