5 million gallons of sewage dump into Ortega River during Hurricane Matthew

Five million gallons of sewage or more flowed into the Ortega River during Hurricane Matthew after a wastewater lift station went offline during the height of the storm Friday.

Do not swim, fish, or do any recreational activities in the Ortega River in the vicinity of the Timuquana Road bridge or upstream for the foreseeable future due to this sewage dump - which began at 2 p.m. and went until 11:45 p.m.

JEA is monitoring the situation and will work with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to keep checking on the river. The public will be notified when it's safe to resume recreational activities on the Ortega River.

The wastewater station was located on 118th Street in southwest Jacksonville.
