Hero Next Door: The Moore family

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The cabinets and shelves at the Good Samaritan Ministries thrift store on West Beaver Street aren't filled because the Moore family has fed more than 130 people in need.

"Our cabinets are kind of bare," said John Moore. "We're living in a dark time right now. We're living in a time when people are struggling paycheck to paycheck. There are people are being laid off on every corner."

Every first and third Wednesday of the month, Moore and his family hold a food drive outside the store, and the line wraps around the store.

"Countless times we have people stand out in that parking lot and cry and just say 'you don't know what a blessing this is to us,'" Moore said. "A lot of times they thank me and I stop them and say 'don't thank me, this is the Lord's ministry.'"

John said his family was given this idea by a friend. It started as a Thanksgiving dinner and it kept getting bigger and bigger.

However, giving food is only one part of this family's ministry.

"If somebody comes in and don't have any clothes we give them clothes," Moore said.

The Moore family opened this thrift store a little over a year ago. People can buy clothes, dishes, furniture and books. The Moore family uses the money from the thrift store to buy food.

"We do everything we can to try and help people. I truly love people. I love to try help people because who knows I may be the guy that needs help next time," he says.

His parents instilled good values in him, John said.

"I won't ever consider myself a hero. I consider the Lord Jesus my hero. I do it for him," Moore said.

In addition to giving food here on the first and third Wednesday of every month here at the thrift store. The Moore family also serves free dinner on the first and third of every month at the union hall here on the Westside of Jacksonville. The Moore family is FCN's "Heroes Next Door."
