Hero Next Door: Big Brother Harold Adams

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – There are more than 200 kids in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program in Jacksonville who are in need of mentors, most are boys.

Exezavier Knight, 10, loves playing instruments.

"We got a couple of lessons," says Harold Adams, Exezavier's Big Brother. "We're still working. We're still in the very, very beginning stage."

Adams bought Exezavier the guitar for Christmas.

"I wanted to play guitar because it's my favorite instrument," said Knight.

For nearly two years, Exezavier and Adams have been almost inseparable.

"He's just a wonderful kid," said Adams.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters program designed to help all children achieve success in life, but only few volunteer.

"This is a situation that's almost at epidemic levels," Adams said. "The need is really, really great."

Adams says he believes in the old adage that it takes a village to raise a child.

"As we can see on the news there's never going to be enough support to help kids make it through life and grow up and be what they want to be," Adams said.

Support Exezavier's mom, Nisaa Knight, is thankful for as she works a full-time job and goes to school.

"My son pretty much gets like a three in one because he gets someone who is like a big brother, who's a mentor and like a grandfather to him," Nisaa said.

Adams is ALSO spends time with Exexavier's older cousin D.J., whose father is in prison.

"He thinks Harold is a real good big brother and he's happy he's doing this," Exezaviar said. "He didn't have to do this but he chose to."

"Sometimes my sister has to work and Harold maybe the only person at my nephew's game," said Nisaa. "So, it really means a lot to my family."

"To be honest with you I don't feel like a hero. I feel like this is just an everyday thing that we all should be doing. It's kind of sad you can't find more situations like this," said Adams.

"He may not think that he's a hero but he really is. Not just for my son, but for my nephew," said Nisaa.
