Habitat for Humanity complex approved in Atlantic Beach

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. -- A complex with about 80 town homes is on the way to Atlantic Beach. Commissioners approved the development earlier this week.

"It's happening, we're thrilled," said Donna Rex, President of Beaches Habitat.

She said it's a big boost for Atlantic Beach.

"We will have these families who will shop here, who will also provide services in the community," she said.

The town houses will be built on a lot at 201 Mayport Road. The lot has been empty for years. Right now, it's full of overgrown grass and litter.

"This community will be at the gateway to Atlantic Beach and Mayport," Rex said.

The development's being approved at a time when thousands of sailors and their families will be moving to the area. That's because more ships will be home-ported at Mayport. Rex says this is Atlantic Beach's chance to shine.

"This will be safe housing in the community," she said.

If you're interested in applying for housing at 201 Mayport, there are guidelines to meet. You can get more information by clicking here.
