Guns found in the home of deadly shooting

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Abbott Scott Bennett, 66, was shot and killed by deputies Tuesday night, after deputies responded to a domestic dispute.

The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. in the 8300 block of Colee Cove Road after receiving information from a relative of the victim and Bennett, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

According to SJSO, four deputies arrived in the area and met with a female who claimed to have been a victim of domestic violence. She told the deputies that Bennett had pushed her to the floor and threatened to kill her during the altercation.

SJSO said three of the deputies went to the residence and met with Bennett.

Investigators confirmed that during the confrontation between the deputies and Bennett, the suspect reached underneath the bed.

Deputies believed the suspect was reaching for a weapon and two of the deputies, Corporal Kevin M. Kier and Deputy Charles K. Simpkiss, opened fire and shot Bennett.

The third deputy, who did not shoot Bennett but used a Taser, was Deputy Casey A. Romein.

Bennett was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the execution of a search warrant, investigators found a .38 special and 9mm/.380 in a drawer under the bed, in the room where Bennett was located during the shooting.

The deputies involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave as standard protocol. Kier has 13 years of service with SJSO, Simpkiss has 7 years of service and Romein has 1 year and 4 months of service.

SJSO said the woman did not have any injuries.
