Georgia man dies while swimming with friends

BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- Friends and family tell FCN they are devastated by the loss of a young man they loved.

Jordan Perkins, 20, of Brunswick drowned in a pond near Georgia Highway 99 on Sunday afternoon. The pond is tucked away in the woods, unspoiled by development.

Frank Lee and his wife lives near Jordan for about 13 years. The Lee's watched Perkins grow up.

"Quiet, real quiet. As a matter of fact, we didn't see anything but just a nice kid," he said. "It's too bad. It's really too bad. I really feel for the parents for that, because you just can't get over that."

Witnesses told police Jordan Perkins tried to swim from one side of the pond to the other. He got halfway and cried out for help and started sinking. A 17-year-old acquaintance told FCN she nearly drowned trying to save Jordan's life, but she could not. "I told Jordan I was so sorry," she said.

She said she wishes she were stronger.

Police said Jordan was under water for about an hour.

Lee said "It's not unusual, but we really wish it was very unusual."

Another 17-year-old friend of Jordan's who didn't want to give his name said "I could use a million words to describe my friend. He's like a brother. I'm shocked."

Perkins leaves behind a 4-year-old sister and an infant brother. He was the eldest child.

"I'm extremely sorry," Lee said of the tragedy.

FCN spoke to Tammy Perkins, Jordan's mother.

"We're all just trying's just awful. It's real devastating to lose your son," she said.

She described her son as "An outgoing child and everybody around him loved him,"

Perkins said her son "was a strong, wonderful swimmer."

She said he was a wrestler at The Glynn Academy, where he graduated from in 2012.

Perkins said her son tried to be respectful and was well mannered. "He met no strangers and got along with everybody," she said.

Jordan's funeral is on Wednesday June 25 at 11 a.m. The viewing is on Tuesday June 24 at 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. in Jessup, Georgia at the Howard and Jones funeral home.
