Frustration over health insurance marketplace kinks

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Two days into the Health Insurance Marketplace opening up online, many people are voicing their concerns about not being able to access the services they've been waiting for.

Under the Affordable Care Act, Florida's 3.5 million uninsured should now have access to affordable care. And those who are already insured but looking for a better option were promised they could log on October 1st and sign up for coverage. But that hasn't been the case for everyone.

Marilyn Clark works from home as a software developer. She's been at it since 1991 and said it's time to retire. Her husband retired back in 2002 but due to a preexisting medical condition, she's unable to get individual health insurance. Under the Affordable Care Act, Clark can no longer be denied coverage.

"As much as I wasn't completely happy with all that's in the Obamacare package, that part of it I have really been looking forward to," said Clark.

So On October 1st as soon as she woke up at 6:30 a.m., Clark said she hopped online only to find out there were numerous kinks that need to be worked out. The system she says was clearly overloaded.

"Didn't you know you would have this many users," Clark said in frustration. "I mean hello!"

According to the Health Planning Council of Northeast Florida they're getting calls from people saying they can't get into the system.

But officials say there's no need to panic. It doesn't matter if you sign up today, tomorrow or next week. As long as you're enrolled by December 15th, your coverage will begin on January 1st.

Still, Clark says she's anxious to know what her options are.

"Just fix it please," said Clark. "Add more servers or whatever!"

She said she also tried to call the Healthcare Marketplace's 800 number to speak with someone about her options, but there was a 30 minute wait. David Weiss with the Health Planning Council of Northeast Florida said you have time to sign up. The prices won't change, and the health insurance coverage will not sell out.
