Mother of child beaten in classroom to sue school district

OSCEOLA, Fla. —The mother of a student beaten up during a classroom fight caught on camera said Monday she will sue the Osceola County School District.

The woman said her son has been bullied at Discovery Intermediate School in Kissimmee since 2013 but that school officials ignored her son's complaints.

"At this point, it's about justice and it's about doing something for our client that he can't do," said Charles Smith, the child's attorney.

Two school employees were charged with child neglect after a video of the classroom brawl was shown to school administrators, who said the aides did nothing to stop the fight on Jan. 9.

A student had recorded the fight on her phone -- it showed a student in the class kicking another student and pushing him against a desk. The attacker told the student, "I will stomp your chest in and kill you," deputies said.

The supervisors, Kristie Lee Gilmore, 38, and Mona Sagar, 59, took no action, according to deputies.

The school district is working to move both employees to a location where they have no contact with children, and the district intends to suspend them without pay.

The alleged attacker and two students accused of throwing chairs were arrested and charged with aggravated battery.
