3 dead after small plane crash in Panhandle

FOUNTAIN, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say three people are dead after a small plane crashed on a rural road in Florida's Panhandle.

The Bay County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Ruth Corley said the plane caused a fire when it crashed Sunday morning in a wooded area near Fountain.

In a statement, Corley said the pilot was taken to a hospital in "extremely critical condition" and three passengers in the plane died.

The names of the victims have not been released.

Corley said the pilot will be taken to a burn center. Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the plane was a Piper PA 28 aircraft with four persons on board.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
