Father of 3 critical after Northside shooting

JACKSONVILLE Fla. -- A Nassau County father of three is in critical condition after a shooting and reported robbery.

It happened just before 2 a.m. in the 9900 block of Old Lem Turner Road near a bar called The Triangle.

Sgt. T.K. Waters with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said people in the area heard a loud "pop" noise.

A man was then found outside bleeding from the left side of his body. Waters said it appears he had been robbed and shot at least once.

At last check, the man was reported to be in "very" critical condition and undergoing surgery at UF Health in Jacksonville.

The sheriff's office has identified the victim as Ernie Bell, 39, of Callahan. His mother, Fay Ogilvie of Jacksonville, said on scene that she was in disbelief when police called her about what happened.

"I got a call about 2:30. They said Ernie Bell was in the hospital. I'm just numb," she said.

Ogilvie said she has been trying to get him to stop going to The Triangle for years, but that he never listened. She said she even took a job there for four months hoping it would run him off.

"I just don't like him being up here on this side of town. This is a wake up call. He is married with kids and should be at home," she said.

Ogilvie said her son has three children, including a set of twins. She said he was a supervisor at a local plumbing company.

Police remained on scene for more than four hours, but said they have no suspects at this time.
