Exchange Park - under the Mathews Bridge - to open this summer

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- If you've driven across the Mathews Bridge lately, you've probably seen cranes and a barge. That's because this summer Exchange Park will be open to the public.

It was formed decades ago after crews dredged the river to make a larger shipping channel.

The 34 acres use to be called Mud Island - made from sand and mud after the river was dredged. A plan is in the works to make it more accessible to residents.

Crews have been working all year to make it a park. The park will have a floating dock and picnic shelters. There is also a possibility for a primitive camping area, according to the Florida Times-Union.

First Coast News spoke with people who live in the Arlington area who have been on the island. Believe it or not, they say rabbits live on the island.
