First Coast events honoring Sept. 11 military and first responders


The Travis Manion Foundation will host the Jacksonville 9/11 Heroes Run 5K race at 10:00 a.m. on September 11 at the Seawalk Pavilion, 1st Street North in Jacksonville. A portion of the proceeds from the 9/11 Heroes Run will benefit the Travis Manion Foundation, which empowers veterans and families of fallen heroes to develop character in future generations. 

The Jacksonville Jaguars will have a special halftime tribute on Sept. 11 at EverBank Field. The regular season opener against the Green Bay Packers starts at 1 p.m.


On Sunday, September 11, the crew of USS New York (LPD 21) will hold a remembrance ceremony at Naval Station Mayport marking the 15th anniversary of the attacks that took place on September 11, 2001 and honor the dedication and duty for those that lost their lives in the aftermath of those attacks. USS New York, a San Antonio-class LPD, is one of three ships that make up the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) that shifted homeports to Naval Station Mayport in December 2013. 


The 4th Annual 9/11 Memorial Run will be hosted by Kings Bay Fire Department and Kings Bay Firefighter Association at Trident Lakes Golf Course. 


The North Florida Bicycle Club invites cyclists of all abilities to join the Endless Summer Watermelon Ride. An expected 900 cyclists will ride through the majestic oak-lined roads of Fort Clinch, through historic Fernandina Beach, along the ocean, and south to the beautiful Talbot Islands State Parks and the St. Johns River. Online registration is available through Sept. 6. Go to to register. Registration is $40 plus tax for NFBC members and $55 plus tax for non-members. Late registration will be $65 plus tax and will be available only at the Atlantic Recreation Center on Sept. 10 and 11. The rides begin and end at the Atlantic Recreation Center, 2500 Atlantic Avenue, which is near the entrance to Fort Clinch State Park. This ride will demonstrate why Fernandina Beach was designated for a 2013 bronze level award by the League of American Bicyclists. Doors open at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.  The ride begins by remembering our fallen with a moment of silence to honor our heroes in a salute to patriotism, followed by the safety briefing. Go to Facebook at for full event schedule, ride times and release plan.


15th Anniversary Memorial 9/11 Ceremony will be held September 9 at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Lake City (182 NE Justine St Lake City, FL 32055)


East Brunswick Township will hold a Night of Remembrance for the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the memorial at the municipal complex, Civic Center Drive.
