Driver who dies during high-speed chase with JSO identified

UPDATE, 3/31/14: The person who died in the crash has been identified as 28-year-old Jermaine Lechardo Plummer, according to JSO Public Information Officer Melissa Bujeda.

The investigation remains active, Bujeda said.

Original story from 3/23/14 below:

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A person died early Sunday morning trying to speed away from a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office cruiser.

JSO Chief Adam Brown said a deputy was in a cruiser in a parking lot near Bert Road and Lillian Road when a car drove by at a high-rate of speed.

The car continued speeding north on Arlington Road, running red lights in the process, Brown said.

When the JSO officer caught up with the car and attempted to stop it, the vehicle continued to drive away.

The car then lost control, left the road, hit a retaining wall and vaulted into the air, Brown said.

The car crashed to the ground and burst into flames near Roger Road and Commerce Street with the driver still inside.

The unidentified driver was pronounced dead on the scene.
