Man's body found on path in wooded area on the Westside

Police found a young man shot to death in the woods on a walking path behind homes.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A man has been found dead in a wooded area behind several homes in the city's Westside Friday.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said it got a call about 4:48 p.m. in reference to a body found in the woods near the 4400 block of Melissa Court West behind several houses.

When authorities arrived, they found a man's body on a path. They said he had a gunshot wound to the head.

JSO is now investigating.

Neighbors told First Coast News that they heard gunshots in the area around 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday.

"It's always something going on down there," one neighbor told First Coast News.

JSO said they are looking to see if the timeframe may be connected to the man's death.

At this time, police haven't released the identity of the victim, only that it's a man who appears to be in his early 20s.
