JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - An officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office was accidentally struck by another officer while in pursuit of a carjacking suspect.
Around 8 p.m., the officer who was struck, identified as Eric Megela, was patrolling the area near W. 13th Street and N. Davis Street. JSO said he noticed a vehicle he believed was involved in an armed carjacking earlier in the day. Megela ran its plates and confirmed it the vehicle from the incident. JSO said he called and notified other officers.
Megela then tried to conduct a traffic stop in the area. JSO said the driver in the vehicle pulled over, but took off on foot. Megela proceeded to chase after the suspect across N. Davis Street.
At this time, JSO said the second officer arrived at the scene, but he didn't see Megela or the suspect running in the rain. JSO said he was able to break, but still struck both Megela and the suspect with his patrol vehicle.
Megela and the suspect were both transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Megela is a 2-year veteran.
