Walls are going up for Jacksonville's new IKEA store

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-  For the past several months, a skeleton of a building has risen along Gate Parkway just west of I-295/SR 9A.  It has looked like any large office or warehouse being built around Jacksonville, with giant steel beams.

Not any more...this week, the giant blue panels have begun going up on the side of the building signaling it will indeed become Jacksonville's first IKEA store, the fifth in Florida.

The Swedish retail giant is famous for products ranging from 'assemble it yourself' furniture to tasty meatballs.

“With IKEA Jacksonville taking shape and blue paneling going up, we continue to be on track for a grand opening this Fall,” said Lars Petersson, IKEA U.S. president in a press release.

“We hope to be enclosed in Summer, and cannot wait for the building’s interior to look like an IKEA store as well.  We know there are many customers in the area who are excited for us to open, including those driving long distances to shop at our other stores, as well those who have yet to experience the unique IKEA shopping concept.”

The store will employ 250 people and hiring will begin later in the spring, according to the company.

The 290,000 square foot store is slated to open this Fall.
