Woman upset at matchmaking service gets refund

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- There's a song out there that says "money can't buy you love."

A Jacksonville woman claims she learned that the hard way after the quality of dates from a matchmaking service weren't up to snuff. So, she called the On Your Side team for help.

Calm and inspiring is how Lisa David likes to be, at home

"Having 'inspire' and life," she said as she looked at an inspirational piece of art work on her living room wall.

She is a breast cancer survivor. She lost her husband of almost 30 years, to cancer a few years ago.

"After he passed, it took some time," She said. It took a long time for her to even begin to let her guard down. "I started trying to go back out into the dating scene."

A friend suggested a matchmaking service.

"I was excited about it because, I thought maybe this will be a step up," she said. "Maybe the caliber of people I meet will be a little more...."

She paid $2,350 dollars on January 13, 2014 for a membership lasting 12 months or 5 dates, whichever comes first. She went on two dates.

"Neither one of them were not even close to what I said I was looking for," She explained.

Lisa said she wound up signing a contract electronically. But claims she only saw the contract and the bold print at the bottom after that. That bold print says in part, "you may cancel this contract without any penalty or obligation within 3 business days from the above date." Lisa admits she allowed to pass.

"Read the fine print. I don't know a product, ever, that only offers. I should've known," she said. "I blame myself because I should've known anything worth anything would be guaranteed for more than 3 days."

Though she wasn't happy with the caliber of those dates, Lisa said the company provided dating services.

"I would be happy to get any of my money back," she said. "Even if it were just $100."

After we got involved, the company's Vice President of Customer Service called First Coast News saying the issue has been resolved. The VP said the company "...Regrets to learn of any dissatisfaction the consumer has expressed with her membership as this is not the norm..."

Lisa said she was told she would get $500 back.

First For You, FCN checked with the Attorney General's website. In Florida, if you contract for services you get in the future, on a continuing basis, you're entitled to a 3-day "cooling off" period. That's the time frame you can cancel. Based on that explanation, It doesn't look like the company has done anything wrong.
