School board chair speaks about superintendent controversy

Clark Fouraker reports. 9/21/2016

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—Duval County School Board Chair Ashley Smith Juarez said Wednesday she's open to a discussion about the best way for the district to serve students.

"It's a matter of how do we get there and that I intend to discuss with the board on Friday," Smith Juarez said.

She attended a joint session of the school board and Jacksonville City Council scheduled well before allegations began surfacing this week she'd wanted Duval Schools Superintendent Nikolai Vitti to resign.

The board chair scheduled a meeting for Friday and allegations were made that she planned to call a vote to fire Vitti.

Since then, she's said the purpose of the meeting is to have a discussion about moving forward.

"If I had intended to put a vote on the floor that I knew was immanent, I would have published it in the agenda," she said.
