Dog named Tebow is victim of hit and run

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Tebow the boxer is the Oswald family's best friend and now the family pet is on the mend.

"We love him," said Lisa Oswald. "He is an inside dog."

Last Thursday, the namesake of the football player Tim Tebow, escaped from the Oswalds' backyard. The family says the five-year-old boxer was less than fifty yards from the house when he was hit by someone driving a truck.

"The person behind the one that hit him is the one that called us," said Oswald. "The person that hit him did not stop."

Oswald said when she received the call -- her contact information was on Tebow's collar -- she became a nervous wreck.

"I didn't want my dog to die cause he has been around forever," she said. "He is like our family."

Tebow is the family dog but was picked out by Danielle, Oswald's daughter. It has been difficult for her because she is on duty at an army base in Colorado. Since the accident, Danielle has called every day to check on Tebow and even talk to him.

Tebow's diagnosis is a broken pelvis. His condition is stable, but he needs surgery to fix that broken pelvis.

"It can cause him problems in the future," said Oswald. "If they don't do the surgery, he will have problems with arthritis."

If they have to move him, they use a towel to lift his lower body and let him walk on his front legs.

She said Tebow needs the surgery. The problem is, the family doesn't have the estimated $3,000 for the procedure.

"We're trying to raise the funds so he can get the surgery and don't suffer," said Oswald.

The family said an alternative to raising the funds would be finding a veterinarian who is willing to perform the surgery free of charge.

"If there's another vet who can do it and do it cheaper," said Oswald, "we would really appreciate that as well."

In the meantime, the family has set up a Go Fund Me account to help raise money.

They're concerned that if Tebow does not get this surgery, he may never be able to walk properly again.
