Clay woman claims therapist touched her inappropriately

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Donna, who wants to remain anonymous, joined Massage Envy in Fleming Island in 2010.

She said she was a loyal customer until April 15th, that's when she canceled her membership.

"The same day I contacted them and reported it," she said. "Is when I canceled it."

Donna said her monthly visits were to massage her legs, arms and neck. She now alleges on her third visit to the same therapist, he went too far.

"He put his hands under my sheet and started handling my breast," she said. "I was stunned."

She said she felt violated but was in such shock she did not try to stop him. Donna said before she knew it the session was over.

"I did not report it on the way out," she said. "I'm in shock I don't know what to do and it makes me feel dirty, it makes me feel ashamed that this has happened to me."

Donna said it bothered her so badly that two days later she reported the incident to the Clay County Sheriff's. There's now an active investigation.

The preliminary findings are this case may be more "simple battery and not a sex offense."

"It took me back to when I was a kid when I was violated," she said. "I just don't know what to do."

She contacted the corporate office and was told such behavior is inappropriate and they would contact the franchisee. Friday she received a call from the franchisee that the therapist had been fired.

"I am glad to see that," she said. "My message is I just don't want this to happened to anybody else, ever."

A spokes person for Massage Envy Spa said in a statement:

"Massage Envy Spa has a zero tolerance police against inappropriate conduct. Each franchisee, including the one involved in this matter, is required to conduct criminal background and reference checks prior to hiring...these and other policies and procedures are well above industry standard and designed to provide millions of members and guests of our franchises with an unmatched wellness experience in a safe and comfortable environment."

The statement added:

"Regarding this matter, the franchisee conducted a full investigation and is cooperating with authorities. The licensed massage therapist involved is no longer employed at this franchised location."
