Coast Guard calls off search for paddleboat passengers

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The Coast Guard suspended its search for a possible person or people in the water at approximately 1:30 p.m. Monday.

A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Air Station Savannah, Georgia, and a 45-foot Response Boat—Medium crew from Station Mayport, Florida, searched east of St. Augustine, Florida, for possible people in the water after a report of an unmanned paddleboat in the area.

The Coast Guard boat crew reported the paddleboat had marine growth and showed no signs of distress. No people were found in the search area.

The crew aboard the cruise ship Carnival Fantasy notified watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville they spotted the unmanned yellow paddleboat 57 miles east of St. Augustine Monday morning, prompting the search.
