Business up this summer for beach shops

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. -- It's a little more than half way through summer and people are flocking to the beach. Souvenir shops along the beach say business is booming compared to the past few years.

"This past spring, and so far this summer, sales have definitely improved. With the construction being complete, foot traffic has improved, sales have improved, everything is just a lot better than, I would say, compared to last summer," said Surf and Skate Surf Shop manager Jessica Valles.

Over the past few years, construction crews worked to renovate 1st Street, making it difficult for people to stop in the stores.

"The construction really set us back a little bit for a while, but with it being complete, it looks beautiful, people want to come down here and see it, so it's great," said Valles.

The same is true next door at Sea Shells Souvenirs.

"Summer's been going very smoothly. We've had a lot of customers come in. When they were re-doing the boardwalks, though, we had a slow of business, but other than that we've been really busy," says Sea Shells Souvenirs sales associate Gabrielle Pastor.
