Breastfeeding photos no longer removed from Facebook

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Photos of women breastfeeding their babies will no longer be considered nudity or pornography on Facebook. The social media network recently changed its policy. It never banned these types of photos before, but pictures were being removed if they were flagged by another Facebook member.

Catie Kuhn of Jacksonville had one of her photos flagged last year.

"The moderators looked at it and decided that there wasn't anything obscene," said Kuhn.

The photo of Kuhn breastfeeding her daughter was never removed, but other women's breastfeeding photos were. Advocacy groups including the #FreetheNipple campaign have been fighting against this kind of censorship on social media. Facebook doesn't say why they changed their policy, but say they "agree that breastfeeding is natural and beautiful" and that the "vast majority of these photos are compliant with our policies."

Kuhn is now 4 1/2 months pregnant with her third child and plans to continue sharing her breastfeeding experiences.

"It's more than just how we're feeding a child, this is bonding, these are things that we want to remember and like most things we want to remember we want to share those on Facebook too," said Kuhn.

For Tiffany Bright, posting her breastfeeding photos was the support she needed. Her daughter was born with tongue-tie, making it difficult for her to latch on.

"So many obstacles that mothers face that make it hard enough as it is to breastfeed that they shouldn't be seen in a bad light for posting a picture of it or being proud of it," said Bright.

Facebook says most of the photos they review are usually brought to their attention by other Facebook users.

"If you don't like it, don't look," said Bright.

In Florida, the law states you can breastfeed your child in a private or public location where you're authorized to be, regardless of whether or not your nipple is covered.
