Chilling video captured from a drone Friday night shows two local surfers having a close encounter with a couple of sharks out in Ponte Vedra Beach.
The viewer who sent First Coast News the video, Julian Goodall, said his friends were surfing around 5 p.m. in the Cabana Beach Club area.
When his friends left shore, Goodall decided to capture their surf session by drone and that's when he noticed two or three sharks in the distance.
"I yelled to them, but they couldn't hear me," Goodall told First Coast News.
About 11 seconds into the video, you can see shark fins poking out of the water just a little ahead from the surfers. About 1 minute 18 seconds into the video, one of the surfers turns around and heads back to shore while a shark flails around close by. It isn't known if the surfer noticed the shark at this time.
"A pretty close encounter," Goodall said. "Luckily no one was hurt."
One of the tips provided by University of Florida's Florida Museum is to avoid the water at dawn, dusk or at night because many sharks are active during these times and they can be hard to see.
