Council Bill Gulliford introduced a proposal at Tuesday's city council meeting to speed up a beach renourishment project.
His plan, approved by a unanimous vote, will allow Mayor Lenny Curry to borrow $7.5 million to repair dunes that were washed away by Hurricane Matthew.
Gulliford wanted the plan to be approved before the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers leaves, otherwise the project would have cost an extra $4 million to bring the equipment back at a later time.
Since the funding was approved, the corps of engineers will talk with the work crews pumping sand back on area beaches about adjusting their current contract to include dune restoration.
