JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- As the summer storm season continues, downed trees and roofs aren't uncommon. Tom Stephens with the Better Business Bureaus scammers looking to make a quick buck because of those storms aren't uncommon either.
"It's a problem every summer," he said.
Stephens says when people have storm damage, they're desperate to get things back to normal. That's when groups of "storm chasers" are the most successful. They go from storm to storm looking for people who have damage.
"You want to stay away from those guys," he said. "For the most part, they're not licensed.
Stephens says there are things to do to make sure you don't fall victim. Don't hire someone in the spur of the moment. Be sure to get quotes, references, and check the company out online.
"It's exactly like a job interview," Stephens said.
He says doing that interview could save you thousands.
"You could pay a down payment and he never shows up again, that's the worst case scenario," he said.
