JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Lisa Wells was only in her early 50's when she passed away unexpectedly earlier this year. Lisa is the wife of one of First Coast New's employees, Sam Wells.
Thursday the community and her students honored her memory in the school garden that she built for the children, which was dedicated to her memory.
Rachel Vitti, wife of Duval Superintendent of Duval County Public Schools Nikolai Vitti, honored Wells at Pickett Elementary School with a reading.
"She was a special teacher, she was a special friend, she was a special wife and she helped a out a lot of people in this city," said Vitti. "She's in a special place right now".
"I know where she is - hers up with God," a student responded.
Wells was a teacher in Jacksonville for 30 years and had a passion for reading with the community. Vitti read to a group of kindergartners a book from the Pearson Foundation's Read for the Record program.
"This book is called Otis by Loren Long," said Vitti.
The kindergartners sat shaded from the sun by crape myrtles and squirmed with delight in their little tiny chairs as they read along with Vitti in the garden built and dedicated to Wells and her memory.
"Jesus is taking care of her now," said a student.
