JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. -- Jacksonville Fire Rescue responded to an early morning fire Tuesday at a pizza place on 3rd Street North.
A call came in around 2:45 a.m. from power washers cleaning businesses at the Holiday Plaza strip mall.
When fire crews arrived, flames and heavy smoke were visible in the recently opened Picnic Pizza restaurant.
The early morning blaze is estimated to have caused the new business about $50,000 in damage, according to State Fire Marshal Public Information Officer Andy Redding.
An investigation revealed the fire started in the pizza ovens, which are usually left on low overnight. The ovens were left on too high Monday night, which ignited pizza boxes and set the blaze in motion.
Neighboring restaurants, Sala Phad Thai and Col. Mustard's Phat Burger, suffered heavy smoke damage as well, but built in fire protected walls and attics may have prevented the fire from spreading.
The Holiday Plaza strip mall is home to several businesses including a nail salon, a convenience store and a Dollar General.
