JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The lions share of work in San Marco has been done.
Tough to tell by a quick drive by as the most visible part of the streetscape project is being worked on now.
On the surface, the mangled surface and dust clouds seem like something out of a movie. On the surface you may want to avoid the area.
But it seems in San Marco, what's on the surface, may be deceiving.
"We opened up when they decided to open this end of the street and then this end of the street," said Kimberly Clarke, who opened her salon in San Marco in the middle of the project.
And chairs stay full.
"San Marco is still open, and folks are walking around. My clients are walking around looking nice, so that adds to it."
The work is to make San Marco easier to navigate with a refurbished city square.
"It's just going to be a new vibe, younger people," Clarke said.
A project that has had its share of delays, detours and dust ups.
"It's not all bad," Clarke said.
Sure there are struggles. But her salon has survived being open throughout the work.
And she said people need to continue to visit this side of town because there's so much more than what's on the surface.
"I hate to see the road torn up, but I know they are working toward a goal and I'm still really happy I opened my business here."
