NASSAU COUNTY, FL. -- A 14-year-old girl has died as a result of an all-terrain vehicle accident that involved a second ATV, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
According to the accident report, 14-year-old Erica Smith of Hilliard, was riding on a 2009 Can-Am along with a second ATV rider, 13-year-old Chas Harrison.
The accident occurred just before 10 p.m. Saturday night on Rayonier's private property.
Florida Highway Patrol reports that both ATVs were traveling southbound on Woods Road.
Harrison was riding ahead of Smith and failed to notice that Harrison had slowed down or stopped and as a result, Smith struck the second ATV.
The impact caused both riders to be ejected and vehicles to flip over several times, police said.
Chas Harrison suffered minor injuries and according to reports, neither riders were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
